OTTUMWA — Daniel Robert Spurgeon, 51, of rural Ottumwa died at 9 a.m. April 1, 2009, at his home. He was born April 15, 1957, in Des Moines to Robert R. and Pauline L. Shoeman Spurgeon. A graduate of Monroe High School in 1975, he owned and operated Spurgeon’s Excavating for the last 30 years. He also owned DDS Morgan Horse Farm, where he bred champion horses. He was a member of the Morgan Horse Association, the Iowa Morgan Horse Club.
Surviving is a son, Chad Spurgeon of Fremont; a granddaughter, Kelsie Spurgeon; his mother, Pauline Spurgeon of Ottumwa; two brothers, Doug Spurgeon of Fordland, Mo., and David Spurgeon of Rogersville, Mo.; and a sister, Karen Myers of Seymour, Mo. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents, Carl and Cora Mae Spurgeon. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the Rev. Charles Luers officiating. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Bloomfield.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the family present from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice, 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottumwa, IA 52501.
