JESUP — Kenneth Wayne Hopkins, 83, of Jesup died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a short illness.
He was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Ironton, Mo., the son of Claude A. Hopkins and Lula (Osborn) Hopkins. He graduated from Jesup High School with the Class of 1944, then graduated from Iowa State University in Ames with a bachelor of arts degree in agri-business, and later in life he obtained his Commodities Broker Certification. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
On Aug. 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to Irma A. Orth at Zion Lutheran Church, rural LaPorte City. Ken worked for DeKalb Seed Corn Company as a District Manager.
Mr. Hopkins is survived by his wife, Irma of Jesup; one daughter, Diane (Bruce) Holmes of Cedar Falls; two sons, Ron (Sue) Hopkins of Duncannon, Pa., and Steve (Sara) Hopkins of Newton; seven grandchildren, Crystal Homes Weber, Tahra Holmes Frampton, Jessica Hopkins of Pennsylvania, Luke Hopkins, Joe Hopkins of Pennsylvania, also Anders Hopkins and Peder Hopkins of Newton; and four great-grandchildren. His parents and stepmother, Bernice Spencer Hopkins, one sister, Wanda Hopkins, in infancy and two grandchildren preceded him in death in infancy.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the American Lutheran Church in Jesup, with the Rev. Dawn Pederson officiating. Shirley Bergman will be the organist. Burial will be at Cedar Crest Cemetery in Jesup with military rites conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup.
Honorary Casket Bearers will be Jim Elson, Ken Mealhow, Richard Yount, Tom Sullivan, Steve Pederson and Dr. Herbert Jones. Casket Bearers will be Leonard Orth, Randy Frush, Wayne Schildmeier, Kenton Zelly, Steve Wirtz, Danette Schildmeier, Anders Hopkins and Peder Hopkins.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 3, at the White Funeral Home in Jesup and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
Memorials will be directed to the American Lutheran Church, Habitat for Humanity–Buchanan County Chapter, and the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be left at www.white-mthope.com.
