Harriet Woodrow Nelson of Newton passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009, from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease at Wesley Park Centre in Newton. She was 88 and preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Bryant Nelson.
A private family service is planned.

Harriet was a lifelong member of the Newton First Congregational United Church of Christ and a member of Chapter H.S. of the P.E.O. sisterhood. She was a member of the Newton Senior High School Class of 1939 and attended Lindenwood University before marrying Bob in 1942. She enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and relatives in Northern Minnesota and enjoyed swimming at the “Y” for exercise.

She is survived by her brother, David M. (Betty) Woodrow of Plymouth, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Reva Awtry Nelson, of Newton; a daughter, Ellen (James) Pierson of Urbandale; a son, John Nelson of Kellogg; and a grandson, Thomas (Gretchen) Pierson of Chicago, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Newton First Congregational United Church of Christ or the Jasper County Historical Society.
The Wallace Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
