PRAIRIE CITY — Marion “Shorty” G. Terlouw, 84, of Prairie City passed away on Friday, March 6, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at the Prairie City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Kinrade officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Prairie City United Methodist Church general fund, the Prairie City Fire Department or the Prairie City Ambulance Service.
Marion was born and raised in rural Sully, Iowa. He was the sixth child in a family of nine and attended the “Chester” rural school, where he completed his education in 1939. At an early age, he learned to do all of the chores and duties that went with rural farm life and exhibited a natural curiosity and talent for mechanical work. Marion married Barbara Daft on April 25, 1945, at the parsonage of the Sully Community Church. A few days later, he left for U.S. Army basic training at Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Ark. In the fall of 1945, he was sent to Hiroshima as part of the first occupational forces in Japan. During his tour of duty, he joined the 11th Airborne Division, made his required jumps and received his “wings”. Marion was then assigned to the motor pool and given the rating of Staff Sgt., where he was responsible for the repair and up-keep of 20 of his battalion’s vehicles.
Following service life, Marion returned to Jasper County, Iowa, and eventually settled in Prairie City in 1949. He owned and operated the Standard Station on Highway 163 until opening Prairie City Motor in 1954. Due to health problems, he retired from the business in 1974 and thereafter kept busy with his hobbies, among them woodworking and antiques.
Marion is survived by his wife; his two sons, Merlin (Nancy) of Reasnor, Iowa, and Michael (Anna) of Prairie Village, Kan.; and his three grandchildren, Steve, Molly and Maggie. He was preceded in death by his parents, John O. and Phebe (Renaud), and five siblings.
