Marie VanGorp
Marie VanGorp, 88, of 500 1st St. N, died of congestive heart failure, Sunday, Dec. 10.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter with Rollin Watters, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Baxter. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
Friends may call after noon Thursday at the funeral home where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials in her name may be left at the funeral home.
The daughter of John and Ruby Thurman Stinson, she was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Lorimore. She was a graduate of Baxter High School and Iowa Teachers College at the University of Northern Iowa. She married Donald Young and was a grade school teacher at a country school. She was a homemaker and a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter.
She later married Bill VanGorp in Newton and was a member of the Community Reformed Church in Newton, a member of the Elks Lodge and Happy Hour Club. She lived in Baxter for 70 years and then in Newton for 18 years.
Survivors include three sisters, Margie Mullihan of Baxter, Jeanne Pollard of Des Moines and Delores Wastier of Baxter; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
