Garold Marvin "Gar" Wood

FLINT, Texas - Garold Marvin "Gar" Wood, 84, of Flint, Texas, formerly of Newton, died Sunday, Aug. 22, at a hospital in Texas.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Grace Chapel Assembly of God with the Rev. Tom Maddox officiating. Burial will be at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery.

The Loyd James Funeral Home in Tyler, Texas is handling arrangements. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A former resident of Jasper County, Mr. Wood was born June 9, 1915, in Newton.

He worked as a general contractor and was a member of the Grace Chapel Assembly of God of Tyler, Assembly of God of Newton, Elks Lodge of Newton, Master Builders of Iowa, Farm Bureau and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife, Trudy Mary Wood of Flint, Texas; three daughters and a son-in-law, Sabra and Jeff Clancy of Flint, Texas, Billie Marie Van Arsdale of Oregon and Robin Wood of Utah; a granddaughter; two sons, Garrett and Asher, both of Oregon; three stepdaughters, Sharon Allen of Minnesota, Karen George of Colorado and Kathy Hickman of Iowa; a stepson, Jim Hickman of Iowa; two sisters, Marjorie Lewis of New Mexico and Wilma Wheeler of Iowa; an aunt, Lucille Steinberger of Iowa; and many grandchildre, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. ~ Newton Daily News, Tuesday, August 24, 1999, p. 7A.
