Shirley Winton, 76, died on Feb. 7, 2009, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Newton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Shirley’s name may be left at the church the day of the service.
Those left to honor Shirley’s memory are her husband, Edward “Dick”; two sons, Don (Joanne Finn) Winton and Kevin (LeAnn) Winton; her two grandchildren, Sophie and Alex, all of Newton; and her many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Shirley Berdene Winton was born on November 21, 1932 in Colfax, Iowa to Leonard and Edna (Woodyard) Owens. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1951. Shirley met Edward Winton on February 14, 1953 for their first date and they were married on May 8, 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple resided in Newton, Iowa.
Shirley worked at Maytag for 7 years, after which she became a homemaker. She later worked for Nolte, Cornman, and Johnson CPA as a bookkeeper from which she recently retired. Shirley was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Newton and a member of Eastern Star Newton Chapter #100. She loved being a housewife, mother, and devoted grandmother. She liked working in her yard/garden.
Shirley passed away on February 7, 2009 in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Her body has been cremated.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Edward “Dick” of 53 years; two sons, Don Winton (girlfriend, Joanne Finn) and Kevin (LeAnn) Winton; and two grandchildren, Sophie and Alex, all of Newton.
She is also survived by four nieces, Roberta (Ed) Wade of Prairie City, Iowa, Betty Jean Valentine of Newton, Joann (Phil) Oswalt of Newton, and Alpha (Leroy) Teusher of Des Moines, Iowa; two nephews, Leonard (Norma) Barton of Huntington, Oregon and Robert (Marilyn) Warrick of Mesa, Arizona; and many great nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Winifred Warrick and Hannah Duffy; and three brothers, Ralph, Ray, and Tommy Owens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left in Shirley’s name at the church the day of the service.
