Marlow I. Good, 76, of Newton died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Restland Cemetery in Baxter
Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or to the donor’s choice may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Charles G. and Jennieve (Patterson) Good, he was born on April 8, 1932, in Rhodes. Marlow has lived in Newton since 1962. He was united in marriage with Judith A. “Judy” Wilcox on Aug. 10, 1956, in Newton.
He co-owned and operated Marlow’s roofing and A&M Gutters, retiring in 2002. He and his family also had owned Good’s Christmas Trees for 13 years.
Marlow spent his early years working as a foreman and cowboy on ranches in Nebraska in the 1950s. While working on a ranch Marlow was responsible for 110,000 acres and cattle. He had also broke horses in Nebraska and California. He had also trained horses for the Caliente race track and for a Hollywood western movie.
Marlow was a craftsman, known for his woodworking talent. He won three Iowa State Fair awards for relief carvings. He had also built grandmother clocks, quilt racks, jewelry and treasure boxes for his family and friends.
Marlow’s hobbies included sketching scenic pictures and going to garage sales. He also loved being with his grandchildren, traveling to visit friends and family and sharing stories.
Survivors include his wife, Judy of Newton; a son, Alan (Shari) Good of Newton; a daughter, Brenda (Mark) Beerntsen of Green Bay, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, Zach, Seth and Holly Good, Nathan, Evan, Brett, Blake, Brandon, Ben and Brianna Beerntsen; a brother, Larry (Sandra) Good of Marshalltown; and a sister, Judi (Ray) Petersen of Victor, Mont.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kay Schermerhorn; and four brothers, Max, Jerry, Donnie and Melvin Good.
