Rockaway Beach, Mo. — Donald R. Birkenholz of Rockaway Beach, Mo., entered into eternal rest Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at Skaggs Community Health Center in Branson, Mo., after a lengthy illness.
Don was born May 23, 1927, in Monroe, the son of Howard and Anna Birkenholz. He married Lois V. Howell Feb. 14, 1951, in Newton.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Don returned to farming. He worked some other jobs, including another stint at farming, before joining Super Valu, Inc., in Urbandale. He retired from Super Valu in 1991 after 22 years.
Don and Lois moved to Rockaway Beach in 1992 from Altoona.
Don loved his family and friends. He always had a smile and no one was a stranger. He enjoyed talking with everyone. He also was a sports enthusiast and if there was a game on TV, he was there.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 58 years, Lois; sons, Ronald and his wife, Christal, of Pleasant Hill, and Douglas and his fiancé, Virginia Beach, of Johnston; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a sister, Wilma Jess of Sun City, Ariz.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Hubert Birkenholz of Newton.
No services are planned. Cremation services are under the direction of Forsyth Whelchel Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the family.
