Mary Engeline (Birkenholtz) Ball went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 21, 2009. Funeral services will be on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the First Christian Church in Newton. Friends may greet the family starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
The daughter of Elmer and Julia (De Bruyn) Birkenholtz, she was born Sept. 10, 1915, in Jasper County. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1936. Mary was united in marriage with Leland Ball on Oct. 11, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Mary was a member of the First Christian Church. She worked at the Howard Fenner’s Restaurant and the Hy-Vee Bakery for 10 years. She enjoyed working with her flowers and going fishing with her husband. Mary was a devoted and loving wife, grandma, sister and friend.
Mary is survived by her seven grandchildren, Dan (Sharla) Dunsbergen, Scott (Chris) Dunsbergen, Tim (Nicole) Dunsbergen, Doug (Gina) Embray, Devin (Angie) Embray, Darrin (Trish) Embray and Melody (Brian) Cordes; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Engeline Jarnagin of Prairie City and Ruth Pauls of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leland in 2003; son, David Lee Ball; and daughter, Betty Lou Ruden.
