James Samuel Stevens, Retired Farmer, Dies at Age of 80 (Dec 5, 1942)

James Samuel Stevens, retired farmer of Washington Township, died at 11 o'clock this morning at his home four miles south of Bowling Green after a protracted illness of complications, aged 80 years.

Mr. Stevens was born on the Clay-Owen county line east of Bowling Green and was a son of Henry and Eliza Royer Stevens, early residents of that community. The deceased had been a member of the Otterbein U. B. Church since a young man, was a prominent farmer of the community for more than half a century and was held in high esteem.

He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Alice Stevens, a daughter and four sons, Mrs. Harley Orman, of Clay City; Clarence, of Detroit; Lee, at home; Zenas, of Newton, IA., and Coy, a soldier in the US Army stationed at Fort Meyer, Fl; also six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The body was taken to the Rentschler Funeral Home at Center Point pending funeral arrangements.

Transcriber (and granddaughter) Note: He had one son, Clarence who spelled his last name Stephens. Also had a girl that lived with them and helped them with the chores considered a daughter and sister but never legally adopted, Huldah Neller.
