Livingston, Abraham

Called in Early Manhood

Abraham Livingston, youngest son of J. C. and Anna Livingston, died at his home in Southeast Newton at 4 o’clock on Monday morning, December 1st, aged nineteen years and four days.

Abe was born in Sioux County, this state, but has lived in Newton since he was three months old. About three years ago he had a very severe attack of the grip, form, which he never fully recovered. For some time his decline had been very rapid, although he continued able to be around until about two weeks ago, since which time he has been confined to his home and it was evident to his loved ones that the end was not far distant. He realized his condition, and was perfectly resigned and happy in the prospect of soon being at rest. He had given his heart to Jesus and on Sunday was baptized and received into the church by his pastor, Rev. C. V. Cowan. At different times during his last hours his voice would ring out clearly in songs of praise – Jesus Lover of My Soul, There’s Sunshine in My Soul Today, Jesus Make Me What I Ought to Be, being among his favorites.

He retained perfect consciousness until the very last moment. Just before his spirit took its flight, while is weeping friends stood around his bedside, he bade them each a loving good bye, and began the song, And I Shall Be Whiter Than Snow, singing until the words and music seemed to die away on his lips, and the song began among friends on earth was finished with the redeemed in Heaven.

We extend our sympathy to the bereaved parents, sister and brothers. The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. C. V. Cowan. ~ The Newton Record, Part Two, Friday, December 6, 1895, Page 1, Column 1
