Robert E. Kreager, 88, of rural Newton died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith officiating. The family will greet friends from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Wittemberg Cemetery. Memorials to Baxter Fire and Ambulance, Hospice of Jasper County, Jasper County Historical Society or Wittemberg Cemetery Association may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Ralph Charles and Floy Pauline (McElroy) Kreager, he was born Dec. 24, 1919, in rural Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1938, and on Sept. 12, 1942, he married Dorothy Louise Swalwell in Kirksville, Mo.
He was a lifelong resident of rural Newton and a lifelong farmer. He was a member of the Jasper County Historical Society and Jasper County Farm Bureau and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, collecting antiques and restoring antique tractors.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Newton; one son, James Kreager of Newton; two daughters, Barbara (Jan) Berry and Beth (Kalven) Simbro, all of Baxter; five grandchildren, Brenda Aldrich (Rick Umbarger), Terry (Nikki) Berry, Erica Simbro (Greg Luna), Josie (Mike) Wright and Andy Simbro; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Robert Mayfield and Ava Jean Wright; two brothers, Ross (Virginia) Kreager of Adel and Harold (Mary) Kreager of Kennebec, S.D.; one sister, Lucille Shaw of Mesa, Ariz.; a special cousin, Gordon Jackson of Monroe; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Morris Kreager; and sister, Nadine Christiansen.
