COLFAX — Joe Gene Sprouse, 75, of Colfax died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Skiff Medical Center of Newton.
Funeral services for Mr. Sprouse will be on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 1:30 p.m. at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax with burial following at McKeever Cemetery. Visitation will be today, Dec. 5, at Coburn Funeral Home of Colfax from 2 to 8 p.m. with family present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be given to Pheasants Forever and online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The son of Alfred and Mary (Hedgecock) Sprouse, Joe was born on April 30, 1933, in Centerville. On Sept. 5, 1953, Joe was united in marriage with Ila Mae Terpstra at Udell. To this union three children were born, Mark, Suzanne, and James.
Joe worked at Maytag for 42 years. He started when he was 18 with a broom in his hand and retired as superintendent of the paint division.
Joe was a true outdoorsman. He enjoyed taking his family fishing, hunting and camping. His true passion was pheasant hunting. Joe enjoyed reading anything he could get his hands on. He could be described as a real history buff.
After his retirement from Maytag, Joe enjoyed traveling the country with his wife. Joe was a member of the Maytag Management Club.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 55 years, Ila Mae Sprouse of Colfax; children, Mark (Sue) Sprouse of Des Moines, Suzanne Sprouse of Muscatine and James (Laurie) Sprouse of Newton; three grandchildren, Dirk, Gabrielle and Sarah; his brother, Tom (Virginia) Sprouse of Kellogg; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his parents.
