ROBERT M. SPAIN

Robert M. Spain, 77, of Newton died of congestive heart failure Wednesday, Dec. 4 at his home.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, 1:30 p.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Newton, with Rev. Paul Axles officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date.

Visitation with the family will be held at a coffee held in the lower level of the church following the memorial service. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church. Reuse Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The son of Marion and Veer Wilson Spain, he was born March 14, 1925 in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School and was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. He married Colleen Edwards on Nov. 20, 1948 in Kellogg. He was owner-operator of Shelly Service Station in Newton for many years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and had served as head usher, a long-time Cancer Society Road to Recovery driver and volunteer, a member of VFW, American Legion and Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Mollie of Lubbock, Texas; two daughers and sons-in-law, Linda and Tim Maack of Lincoln, Neb., and Kathy and Steve Vetter of Washington, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Spain of Newton and Dale Spain of Hayward, Calif.; and four sisters, Doris Van Baale of Sedalia, Mo., Wanda DeMoss of Altoona, Betty Springer of Newton, and Ruth Partelow of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and an infant brother.
