Services Held For Claude Evert Stevens

Claude Evert Stevens, 62, a longtime resident of this city, died suddenly Thursday, Oct. 2, 1969, at his home on West Pleasant Street, of a stroke.

Mr. Stevens was one of eleven children of Thomas and Louise Stevens. He was born at Mystic, Iowa, April 14, 1907.

He was married on Dec. 23, 1931, to Jessie Wade Daly at Newton.

Mr. Stevens retired in July of this year from the Maytag Co., where he had been employed for more than 35 years. He worked in the coal mines in southern Iowa before his parents moved to Colfax and later to Newton. He had been a resident of Colfax for more than 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Milo, Thomas, Robert and Joe.

Survivors are his wife, Jessie; a son, Earl Stevens of Colfax; and two step-daughters, Mr. Arnold (Lela) Stiers of Colfax and Mrs. Jack (Colleen) Senter of Cypress, Calif.; five brothers, Fred, Bert, Elmer and Clarence, all of Newton, and Alva of Ottumwa; a sister, Mrs. Florence Hanson of Newton; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church of Colfax. The Rev. Charles Wilder, minister of the church, officiated.

Robert Burns was the soloist and Mrs. Hugh Elrod was the organist.

The pallbearers were Elmer Scieroe, Dale Main, Donald Jones, Robert French, Edward Hodgson Sr. and Harry Linn.

Mrs. Edward Hodgson Sr., Mrs. Harry Linn and Mrs. Dale Main were in charge of the flowers.

Burial was in the Colfax Cemetery.
