Ralph C. Vanderzyl, 58, of Newton died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at his home in Newton.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of the First United Methodist Church in Newton officiating.
The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery in the veteran’s section.
Memorials to the First United Methodist church or the VFW Post 1655 may be left at the funeral home.
The son of S. Herbert and Ruth D. (Carlson) Vanderzyl, Ralph was born on Nov. 26, 1949, in Newton where he was a lifelong resident. Ralph was a graduate of Newton Senior High School in 1968.
He retired as a tech in production for the Maytag Company where he had worked for over 30 years. Ralph was a member of the First United Methodist Church, VFW Post 1655 and an Endowment Member of the NRA.
He served his country in the U. S. Navy during Vietnam. Ralph was a history buff and enjoyed coal mining and family history. He had also been his mother’s caregiver the past few years. Ralph enjoyed doing outdoor activities.
Survivors include his mother, Ruth Vanderzyl of Newton; two brothers, Herbert L. “Lance” (Gloria) Vanderzyl of Yuma, Ariz., and Tom Vanderzyl of Knoxville; his nieces and nephews, Jared, Jeremy and Janessa; and his great-nieces and great-nephews.
Ralph was preceded in death by his father, S. Herbert Vanderzyl in 2006.
