FRED V. VARNER DIES THURSDAY; SERVICES MONDAY

Fred V. Varner, 86, of 733 S. Fifth Ave. E., a resident of Newton for the past five years, died at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home.

Death was attributed to a heart condition.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Morgan-Loehr Funeral Home.

The Rev. Hilton Griswold, minister of the Assembly of God Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery.

Mr. Varner will lie in state at the Morgan-Loehr Funeral Home after noon Saturday.

Survivors are his wife, the former Florence Baty; three sons, Harold Varner of Newton, Dean F. Varner of Chicago and Lyle Varner of Baldwin Park, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Thelma) Martin of Des Moines, Mrs. Charles (Genevie) Larrison of Newton and Miss Eulah Mae Varner of Kansas City, Mo.; a step-daughter, Miss Mozelle Baty of Newton; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; seven brothers; four sisters; a son; grandchild and great-grandchild.

Mr. Varner was a member of the Layman, Ohio, Methodist Church, and a member of the Corydon Odd Fellows Lodge since 1900.

The son of David and Caroline Varner, he was born June 4, 1878 at Layman, Ohio, and was educated in schools near Layman and at business college at Van Wert, Ohio.

Mr. Varner, a Rock Island agent at Reasnor for a number of years and at Corydon for 20 years, retired in 1957 after 50 years of service.

He was married to Rilla Grier who died in 1922 and later married Florence Baty in December 1922 at Newton.
