PRAIRIE CITY — Barney Snetselaar, 89 of Prairie City, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
Funeral services will be Monday, Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at First Reformed Church in Prairie City with burial following at Waveland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2008, from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City. The family will greet friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Prairie City First Reformed Church and online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The son of Berend and Jacoba (Van de Craats) Snetselaar, Barney was born on June 21, 1919 in Monroe and lived near Fairmont and Ivy. He had lived on the farm until he was called into service during WWII. He served with the 103rd infantry division in France, Germany, and Austria. During this time he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star. Barney worked with Star Oil Co. in Prairie City for over 30 years On October 22, 1947, Barney was united in marriage to Velma Lois Fees at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union, two beloved children were born. He was a lifelong member of the Prairie City First Reformed Church.
Those left to honor his memory are his two children, Gary (Linda) Snetselaar of Iowa City and JoEllen (Mike) VandeLune of Urbandale; five grandchildren and a sister, Gertrude Van Ryswyk in Newton. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife in 2005; a brother, Geurt, who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge; a brother and sister in infancy; a brother, Gysbert Snetselaar and two sisters, Jennie Vander Waal and Alice Klyn.
