Doris M. (Young) Wasson, 91, of Newton died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at Park Centre in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at the United Presbyterian Church, 209 N. Second Ave. E., in Newton with the Rev. Don Freeman officiating.
The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday, Sept. 29, at the church. Burial will be at the Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left in Doris’ name to be used for various organizations and may be left at the church on the day of the service.
The Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton is in charge of arrangements.
Born March 11, 1917, in Newton, she was the daughter of Lloyd “Todd” and Blanche (Ryan) Young. Doris was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. She was a 1934 graduate of Newton Senior High School. She taught country school and was a homemaker.
Doris was united in marriage to James Everette Wasson on Aug. 30, 1941, in Newton.
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, where she held various offices, the Jasper County Farm Bureau, where she was active for many years and was the County Women’s Chairman, she was a 4-H leader; and a volunteer for several organizations, including Skiff Medical Center and the Jasper County Museum. Doris enjoyed gardening, knitting and traveling.
Survivors include a son, Jim (Darla) Wasson of Armour, SD.; a daughter, Jean Wasson of The Villages, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jim (Summer) Wasson, Rob (Annie) Wasson and Ryan (Kalleen Cap) Wasson; and one great-grandson, Miles Everette Wasson.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Everette Wasson in 2003; and her brother, Chuck Young.
