Agnes (Keating) Birkenholz, 87, of Newton died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home in Newton.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Monday, Sept. 15, at the funeral home. The Rev. Gary Marzolf, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Newton will officiate. Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be left to the First United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
The daughter of Frele and June Belle (Harden) Keating, Agnes was born on Aug. 12, 1921, in Montezuma. Agnes grew up in Montezuma and lived in several cities until settling in Newton in the late 1940s.
She was united in marriage to Carroll M. Birkenholz on July 24, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo. She and Carroll called Newton home until moving to South Long Lake in Minnesota in 1983. They moved back to Iowa in 1999. They wintered in Mesa, Ariz., for several years.
Agnes worked as a secretary for the ordinance plant in Ankeny during World War II and the Ford Motor Division in Des Moines. She worked as a legal secretary for Korf, Diehl, Clayton and Cleverley in Newton.
She was a 50 year member of First United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women.
Agnes enjoyed cross-stitch and crocheting, playing the organ and dancing and working crossword puzzles and reading. Agnes had a soft spot for cats and liked to travel.
Survivors include her daughter, Janet Miller of Depoe Bay, Ore.; her son, David (Shirley) Birkenholz of Newton; and two grandchildren, Sara and Brian Birkenholz.
Agnes was preceded in death by his parents and her husband, Carroll in 2005.
