Donald Clark Slycord, 83, of Newton died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Jasper County.
Don was born in Oskaloosa on July 27, 1925, to Cornie and Ruth (Adams) Slycord. Don was a gunner’s mate on the USS Intrepid during World War II. He was employed at Maytag as a tool and die maker for 31 years until his retirement in 1978. He was married June 27, 1943, to Mildred “Tootie” Woody in Unionville, Mo., and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.
He is survived by his wife; his children, Don W. (Kathy) Slycord of Newton, Randy (Colette) Slycord of Redmond, Wash., Merriellen (Kenny) Meyer and Merrianne and Bob Briese, all of Newton; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his siblings, Wayne (Shirley) Slycord of Eldon and Ruth Ann (John) VerPloegh of Beacon; and his brothers-in-law, Glenn Woody and Verland (Pat) Beckham, all of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sherry Smith; and brothers, Paul and Merle Slycord.
