Ernest G. McFarland, 77, of Newton died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at USA Healthcare of Newton.
Funeral services were today, Monday, Sept. 15, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. Larry Walker of Community Heights Alliance Church officiated.
Memorials to the National Parkinson Foundation or Community Heights Alliance Church may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Albert and Zelma (Hawk) McFarland, he was born on Nov. 19, 1930, in Ottumwa. He grew up in Albia and had lived in Newton since 1955. He graduated from Albia High School in 1948 and graduated from Iowa State University in 1951 from the dairy plant operations program.
Ernest was united in marriage with F. Louise Allison on Sept. 16, 1950, in Albia.
He was a production worker in the sheet metal department at the Maytag Company for over 33 years, retiring in 1987. Ernest attended the Community Heights Alliance Church and was a member of the UAW 997 Retirees. He enjoyed woodworking, crafts, gardening, collecting tractors and attending his grandchildren’s events.
Survivors include his wife, Louise McFarland of Newton; one son, Jimmy D. McFarland of Newton; one daughter, Jocile (Doug) Versteegh of Newton; four grandchildren, Natalie (Dustin) Hedlund of Ames, Jessica Versteegh (and Jeremy Smith), Josh (Tara) Versteegh and Jake Versteegh, all of Newton; one great-grandchild, Samantha Smith of Newton; one brother, Max (Nancy) McFarland of Albia; two sisters, Margaret (Walt) Jay of Ottumwa and Darlene Rogers of Albia; one sister-in-law, Ruth McFarland of Albia; and many nieces and nephews.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Paul, Harry and Charles McFarland.
