Richard A. “Rick” Ervin, 46, of Newton died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 16, at the First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. Mark Young officiating. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Delmar.
Memorials to the Rick Ervin Memorial Fund may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.
The son of Richard and Shirley (Sinclair) Ervin, he was born on Oct. 3, 1961, in Des Moines.
A graduate of Indianola High School, Rick had a 26-year career in the United States Army. He was currently working as a technician at Camp Dodge in Johnston. He was a member of the First Christian Church and the VFW.
Rick was united in marriage to Paula Jean Tabor on Sept. 18, 1982, in Newton. On Aug. 12, 2000, he was united in marriage to Angela Flanery in Newton.
Rick’s kids were the most important thing in his life and he always put them before anything else.
Survivors include his wife, Angela “Angie” of Newton; his three sons, David (Bailey) Chaplin of Cedar Rapids, Jacob Ervin and Lucas Ervin, both of Newton; one daughter, Marley (Cory) Simonson of Maquokata; his mother and stepfather, Shirley and James Ostrander of Indianola; his father and stepmother, Dick and Nancy Ervin of Indianola; one brother, Scott and Paula Ervin of Jewell; one sister, Sherry May of New Mexico; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Patrick and Jessica Flanery of Burnsville, Minn.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kelle and Craig Brinson of Edgewater, Fla.; his father-in-law, David Flanery of Holly Hill, Fla.; his aunt and uncle, Chuck and Gladys Harris of Newton; his mother-in-law, Pauline Tabor of Newton; and a grandmother, Mildred Schneden of Delmar.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Paula Tabor; a son, Shawn Chaplin; a mother-in-law, Jan Flanery; grandparents, Ruby and Kassell Sinclair and Charles Richard Ervin; a sister, Kim Ervin; a cousin, Dawn Harris; and his great-grandma Schultz.
