MONROE - Funeral services for Lucille Hilgers Stepleton, 76, a longtime resident of Monroe, were held today, Jan. 8, at the Monroe United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Gerald Mc Gee, pastor of the church, conducted services. Burial was in Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Memorials to the Monroe United Methodist Church may be left at the Pella garden Chapel Funeral Home.

Mrs. Stepleton died Friday at Skiff medical Center in Newton.

Survivors are a son, Norman of Cedar Rapids; four daughters, Fern Harper (Mrs. Bob) Zern of Irving, Texas, Thelma Shannon of Monroe, Doris (Mrs. Jake) Flanagan of Monroe; and Cecilia (Mrs. George) Bell of Marshalltown; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a sister, Zita Smith of Des Moines; and a brother, Pearl Hilgers of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Cecil June 21, 1977 and a child in infancy.

Mrs. Stepleton, who was employed at Duncans and Ferrells prior to her retirement in 1976, was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, Methodist Women, Forever Young Club, Todays club, American Legion Auxiliary, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Knoxville.

The daughter of Frank and Nina Lyons Hilgers, she was born July 23, 1913 at Valley Junction (West Des Moines) and grew up and attended rural schools in the Valley Junction area.

She was married to Cecil Stepleton April 29, 1928.

Mrs. Stepleton had resided in Monroe for 46 years. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1990.
