Unnita M. Starrett

Unnita Butcher Starrett, 87, of 406 E. 19th St. S., a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 28, at Skiff Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Friday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors are two sons, Paul William Myers of Newton and George Myers Jr. of North Little Rock, Ark.; a daughter, June (Mrs. Clarence) Kingery of Kellogg; 23 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a sister, Eleanor (Mrs. George) Newcomb of San Antonio, Texas, a step-sister, Rosalie (Mrs. Lewis) Crocker of Fremont, Neb., a step-brother, Ivan Wicker of Springview, Neb., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, George R. Myers in 1950, second husband, Charles P. Starrett in 1971, a son in infancy, a son, Robert D. Myers, in 1980, a step-son, Harry Starrett, a grandson, four brothers, four sisters, two-step-brothers and a step-sister.

Mrs. Starrett was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Church Circle, Newton Chapter 100 Order of Eastern Star, Nazareth White Shrine, Pythian Sisters and was a 50-year member of the Amboy Grange and the Navy Mothers.

The daughter of William D. and Dell D. Richmond Butcher, she was born Feb. 2, 1903 in Monroe County and attended Monroe County schools.

She was married to George R. Myers July 14, 1922 in Knoxville and to Charles P. Starrett Dec. 8, 1954 in Marshalltown.

A resident of Jasper County since 1924, she moved to Newton in 1954. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, February 1990.
