Francis A. Southern

Funeral services for Francis A. Southern, 70, of 1108 S. 14th Ave. W., a lifelong resident of the Mingo and Newton areas, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Newton First United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor fo the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Ashton Cemetery north of Mingo.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 6 p.m. today. Family visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials in his name may be left at the funeral home.

Mr. Southern died Monday of respiratory failure at the Mesa, Ariz., Lutheran Hospital.

Survivors are his wife, Margery; a daughter, Lana (Mrs. Richard) Kruse of Ankeny; and a grandson, Kevin Kruse of Ankeny.

Also surviving are a brother, Howard Southern of Mingo and a sister, Colene (Mrs. Ivan) Hinshaw of Newton.

Mr. Southern was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Richard Feb. 15, 1989, and a brother, Lynn Southern.

Mr. Southern was a member of the Newton First United Methodist Church, Newton Elks Lodge BPOE 1255 and the Mingo Volunteer Fire Department.

He served for two terms as president of the Mingo community School District Board, was a Poweshiek Township trustee, served on the county election board and was a Democratic committeeman.

He also was a past president and director of the Mingo Grain Co.

Mr. Southern farmed in the Mingo area for 43 years.

The son of Arthur A. and Lucinda N. Jones Southern, he was born Oct. 15, 1919 in Mingo and was a 1937 graduate of Mingo Community High School.

He was married to Margery Wiley June 30, 1938 in Missouri. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, March 1990.
