Elsie Mae Sparks

LYNNVILLE - Funeral services for Elsie Mae Sparks, 83, of Lynnville, a longtime third and fourth grade teacher in the Lynnville-Sully area, were held Monday, Sept. 10, at Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon.

The Rev. Tom Vander Well, pastor of the Lynnville Friends Church, conducted services. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville.

Memorials to the Lynnville Friends Church will be accepted.

She died Friday at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.

Survivors are three sisters, Lucile Sparks, Edna Copeland and Blanche Sparks, all of Lynnville, and four brothers, Kenneth and Floyd and Lloyd, all of Lynnville, and Ed, of Harlan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Millard, and a nephew, Keith.

Miss Sparks, a member of the Lynnville Friends Church, taught Sunday school for 49 years and for many years organized and helped to conduct the summer Bible schools.

The daughter of Ed and Myrtle Elliott Sparks, she was born April 29, 1907 near Lynnville and was a 1926 graduate of Lynnville High School.

She received her teacher certificate from University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls and attended Penn University in Oskaloosa and Drake University in Des Moines. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 1990.
