Emma M. Soderblom

Emma M. Nelson Soderblom, 94, a resident of Nelson Manor Nursing Home since 1983 and a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died this morning, Nov. 16, at the Nelson Manor of complications of a stroke.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. H. Eugene Cedarholm, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Sunday. Visitation with the family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the First Lutheran Church elevator Fund will be accepted.

Survivors are two sons, Verne of Rt. 3, Newton, and Harry of Sun City, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Albert, in December, 1977, a step-son, Ivan Soderblom of Sweden; and a sister, Christine Klootwyk.

Mrs. Soderblom, a homemaker and secretary for Soderblom Brothers Construction, was a lifelong member of the First Lutheran Church for which she had taught Sunday school and was a church secretary for a number of years.

The daughter of P.K. and Minnie Anderson Nelson, she was born Oct. 12, 1896 in Jasper County and was graduated from Newton Community High School, for which she had served as secretary to the board of education from 1913 to 1925.

She was married to Albert Soderblom Nov. 8, 1922 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, November 1990.
