Travis K. Smith, 68, of 802 N. 9th Ave. E., a resident of Newton for 39 years, died Monday morning, April 2, of a heart attack suffered while delivering Meals on Wheels.

Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace-Pence funeral Home.

The Rev. Bill Adams, assistant pastor of the Community Heights Alliance Church, will conduct services.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held following funeral services.

Additional services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Husted-Ingersoll Funeral Home in Unionville, Mo. Burial will be in Pherigo Cemetery in rural Unionville.

Memorials to a fund in his name may be left at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

Survivors are his wife, Louise; a son, Glen Loren Smith of Pekin, Ill.; two daughters, Linda (Mrs. Danny) Valentine of Powersville, Mo., and Cheryl (Mrs. Don) Ahrens of Des Moines; a step-daughter, Lisa Ethridge of Colfax; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Harry Smith of Unionville, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Nellie, in 1985.

Mr. Smith, a member of the Community Heights Alliance Church, Destroyer Escort Sailors Association and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1655, was a navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theater on the U.S.S. Wileman.

A retired employee of the Maytag Co., he had been employed in the dryer assembly department.

The son of Frank H. and Elizabeth "Lizie" Cassady Smith, he was born Oct. 8, 1921 in Putnam County, Mo., and attended Missouri rural schools.

He was married to Nellie C. Medlin March 2, 1940 in Unionville, Mo., and to Louise Quick Carter in October, 1986, in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1990.
