Clara A. Smith

Clara A. Spading Smith, 85, of 2212 S. 8th Ave. E., died today Sept. 21, at Skiff Medical Center of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Wallace-Pence funeral Home.

The Rev. Robert A. Shaw, pastor of the United Pentecostal Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 8 a.m. Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials o the American cancer Society may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard R. and Joan of Columbus, Ga., and Roger K. of Newton; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Arlene and Gerald Van Dyke of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter, Tammy (Mrs. Joel Provin of Newton, who was raised by Mrs. Smith); 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Ella Graham of Grinnell; and a special friend, Tracy Eppstein of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Floyd E., Jan. 24, 1980, a son, Floyd Jr., July 12, 1987, a brother, Robert Spading; and a sister, Mabel Mc Keag.

Mrs. Smith, a homemaker, helped her husband farm near Colfax.

The daughter of Robert and Anna Buckno Spading, she was born Aug. 30, 1907 at Malcom and attended Malcom schools.

She was married to Floyd E. Smith Jan. 1, 1926 in Tama. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 1992
