PELLA - Margaret Awtry Slycord, 86, a former longtime resident of the Galesburg area, died Monday, Jan 21, at the home of her son in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella.

The Rev. Edward Sullivan of Marshalltown will conduct services and burial will be in Hewitt Cemetery near Galesburg.

Friends may call at the funeral home all day Wednesday and family visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Pella Community Hospital may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are two sons, Robert of Hopewell, Va., and Norman of Newton; a daughter, Mary Briggs of Reasnor; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Cornie, Sept. 27, 1976, a son, Verlon, in 1962, three brothers, Harry, Giles and Charles Awtry, and a sister, Ruby Michmershuizen.

Mrs. Slycord was employed at the Pella Community Hospital for 17 years.

The daughter of Joe and Elizabeth Wiedeman Awtry, she was born June 16, 1904 in Jasper County and grew up and was educated in Elk Creek Township.

She was married to Cornie Slycord in 1922 and the couple resided in the Galesburg area until moving to Pella in 1962. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1991
