Funeral services for Jean Jontz Schmidt, 66, of 2104 1st Ave W., a lifelong resident of Jasper County, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Darrell Bailey, pastor of the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ, will conduct service. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon today. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or the Muscular Dystrophy Association will be accepted.

She died Thursday morning at her home.

Survivors are her husband, Vernon; two daughters, Connie Hagerman of Minneapolis, Minn., and Marilee Magg of Colfax; two grandchildren; a brother, Warren Jontz of Newton and her father, Hugh Jontz of Baxter.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Mrs. Schmidt, a member of the Navy Waves during World War II, was a homemaker and member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter.

The daughter of Hugh and Esther Price Jontz, she was born Nov. 19, 1923 in Rhodes and was graduated from Newton Community High School.

She was married to Vernon L. "Smitty" Schmidt Dec. 29, 1949 in Baxter. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1990
