PELLA - Gerret Schilt, 81, of Pella, a former resident of the Prairie City and Runnells communities, died Tuesday, March 26, at the Griffin Nursing Center in Knoxville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella.

The Rev. Mark Beach, pastor of the Pella First Christian Reformed Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Pella.

Memorials to the Pella Christian School may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are two sisters, Francene Poortinga and Lena M. Van Zee, both of Pella; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Bertus.

Mr. Schlit was a member of the First Christian reformed Church and the American Legion, both in Pella.

The son of Andrew and Elizabeth Ver Waal Schilt, he was born Oct. 19, 1909 in The Netherlands.

He came to the United States in 1922, residing in Runnells and Prairie City before moving to Pella more than 50 years ago.

He retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Knoxville where he had been employed for 30 years. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, March 1991
