Marion L. Van Gorp

SULLY - Marion Lester Van Gorp, 91, a resident of the Sully area since 1939, died Friday, Dec. 30, at the Pella Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Sully First Reformed Church.

The Rev. Roger Punt, assisted by the Rev. Brice Hoyt, conducted services.

Burial was in Bethany Cemetery.

Memorials to the Sunday school program of the Sully First Reformed Church will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Marge; six children and their spouses, Pat and Alfred Eckermann of Denver, Colo., Marilyn and Norman Van Wyk of Pella, Dean and Mary Van Gorp of DeSoto, Kan., Larry and Carol Van Gorp of Newton, Linda Van Gorp Morstein of New Orleans, La., and Stu and Sue Van Gorp of Lenexa, Kan.; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Vernon P. and a sister, Martha J. Hoksbergen, both of Pella.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John R., Gerrit D. and Clarence S., and a sister, Marie Hoksbergen.

Mr. Van Gorp was a member of the Sully First Reformed church for which he served as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the consistory.

The son of Peter G. and Wouzina Ter Louw Van Gorp, he was born Aug. 17, 1903 on his parents' farm north of Pella in the Sandridge vicinity.

He attended the Sandridge School.

He was married to Marjorie Esther Van Roekel Feb. 23, 1933 in Pella.

After their marriage, they farmed in the Sandridge community until moving south of Sully in 1939.

He retired in 1968.

Mr. Van Gorp also served as a 4-H leader, a member of the Lynn Grove Township Board of Trustees and as a substitute mail carrier.

They moved into Sully in 1969. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, December 1994.
