Josephine Kleinendorst Sparks, 82, of Careage of Newton, formerly of 400 E. 8th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1925, died of congestive heart failure Thursday, Jan. 19, at Careage.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services.

Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. today and visitation with family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or the Newton Community Educational Foundation will be accepted.

Survivors are two sons, Dr. Robert D. of Menlo Park, Calif., and Ronald B. Sparks of Sun City West, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, Lester "Bud" Kleinendorst and Bernard Kleinendorst, both of Newton; and six sisters, Elise Weldon, Wilma Creed, and Bernice York, all of Newton, Vera Calhoun of Naperville, Ill., LeVonne Talbott of Olathe, Kan., and Beverly Osborn of Cedar Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Albert, in 1969, two brothers, Cornelius and John Kleinendorst and two sisters, Lorena, in infancy, and Leona Klouda.

Mrs. Sparks, a member of the First United Methodist church, Jasper County Senior citizens, Izaak Walton League Ikettes and Newton Camera Club, was employed at the Maytag Co., headquarters for 30 years, retiring in 1975.

The daughter of Neal and Elizabeth Van Hemert Kleinendorst, she was born Nov. 29, 1912 in Otley and was educated in Lynnville and Newton schools.

She was married to Albert L. Sparks Dec. 26, 1931 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1995
