James K. Riherd

KNOXVILLE - Funeral services for James Kenneth Riherd, 74, of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Knoxville, a former resident of the Red Rock community, were held Monday, Jan. 23, at Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville.

The Rev. Robert Wells conducted services.

Burial was in Red Rock Cemetery.

Memorials to the Church of Christ in Knoxville will be accepted.

He died Friday at the Medical Center.

Survivors are two sons, William O. of Pella and Phillip of Spanish Fort, Ala.; two daughters, Sally Shaw of Newton and Jane Clingman-Utterback of Fairhope, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Arthur of Belle Plaine; and two sisters, Ruby Murphy of Belle Plaine and Grace Mabie of Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Sibyl, in March, 1993, a brother and a sister.

Mr. Riherd, an employee of the Maytag Co. in Newton for 10 years, had been employed at the Veterans Medical Center for 30 years until his retirement in 1982. He also had been a security guard at Rolscreen in Pella.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the U.S.S. Pennsylvania.

Mr. Riherd was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge 90 Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Knoxville for which he had served as noble grand many times.

The son of William Alfred and Maude Estella Shilling Riherd, he was born Aug. 11, 1920 in Red Rock.

He was married to Sibyl Mae Donahue at Rock Rapids.

He also resided at Webster City and Mankato, Minn. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1995
