Van Nostrand, former Newton Daily News editor, dies at 86

INDIANOLA - E. J. "Van" Van Nostrand, 86, of The Village, a retirement center in Indianola, publisher of The Creston News Advertiser from 1946 until 1973 and former editor of The Newton Daily News, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of complication from a recent respiratory illness.

The Newton Daily News and Creston News Advertiser are both members of the B. F. Shaw Newspaper Group which is based at Dixon, Ill.

"He was an excellent writer and a true leader of the community," E. K. Shaw of Newton, chairman of the board of directors of the Shaw Corp., said.

"He had more influence than anyone in getting the lakes built in the Creston area for water supplies."

Mr. Van Nostrand worked on boosting the area's water supply with the establishment of Green Valley Lake and later the Twelve Mile and Three Mile watershed construction projects.

Mr. Van Nostrand, who began his newspaper career in Newton, was awarded the Master Editor and Publisher Award by the Iowa Press Association in 1972.

He also was the first adult honorary member of the National Honor Society at Creston High School and served on the statewide Health and Coordinating Council under former Gov. Robert Ray and Gov. Terry Brandstad.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Creston First United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Creston.

Visitation will be held after 3 p.m. today at the Keating-Lindasy Funeral Home in Creston.

Memorials to the Good Shepherd Fund at The Village in Indianola or the Creston First United Methodist Church will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Thelma Carney; a son, James of Montrose, Pa.; two step-sons, Dick Carney of Creston and Dene Carney of Cross Lake, Minn.; and a sister, Myra Schroeder of Washington, Iowa.

Mr. Van Nostrand was president of the Creston Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Creston Development Co.

Among his professional associations was membership on the board of the Iowa Daily Press Association. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1995
