Helen B. Mc Cumber

Helen Bernice Meldrem Mc Cumber, 59, of 820 S. 2nd Ave. W., a lifelong resident of Newton and owner of Helen's Sewing Shop, died of cancer Tuesday, April 20, at the home of her daughter, Rose Butler, in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Paul Wilcox, pastor of St. Luke United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday and visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County, St. Luke United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, the American Cancer Society or Moose Lodge Ritual Staff will be accepted.

Survivors are three sons, Walter, Rodney and Ronald, all of Newton; three daughters, Rose (Mrs. Donald) Butler and Teresa (Mrs. Danny) Young, both of Newton, and Sandra Cluck of Kellogg; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her mother, Ruby Henze of Newton; a brother, Richard Meldrem of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and two sisters, Lola (Mrs. Louis) Doty of Cosmos, Minn., and Fay Moore of Isabella, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her father and husband, Frank, May 10, 1992.

Mrs. Mc Cumber, a seamstress, was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Ikettes, Women of the Moose and Piece Makers Quilt Guild.

The daughter of Elton Adelbert and Ruby Evelyn Smith Meldrem, she was born April 20, 1934 in Iowa City and was graduated from Newton Community High School.

She was married to Frank Matson Mc Cumber Dec. 10, 1950 in Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1993.
