Laurel N. Bates

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Laurel Nadine Beard Bates, 83, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Mingo and former owner-operator of the Mingo Meat Locker, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Phoenix.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, sept. 29, at the Mingo United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Graham Cemetery in rural Mingo.

Friends may call at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton after 1 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Mingo United Methodist Church will be accepted.

Survivors are her husband, Elnathan; a son, Howard Edward Maxwell Jr. of Altoona; four daughters, Karalyn Sue Gerheart and Jean Marie Reece, both of Des Moines, Charlene Ann Scott of Phoenix, Ariz., and Alice Lorraine Lundberg of Derby; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Delmar Beard of Newton, and a sister, Verla Shill of Nevada.

She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, Howard W. Maxwell.

She was a member of the Mingo United Methodist Church.

The daughter of Willis Wesley and Ina Mary Harter Beard, she was born Nov. 23, 1909 in Mingo.

She was married to Howard W. Maxwell and later to Elnathan Bates.

Mrs. Bates lived in Mingo until moving to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1987. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 1993
