ALTOONA - Memorial services for Edith H. Hough Baird, 99, of Altoona, a former longtime resident of Newton, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newton.

The Rev. William Ortt, rector of the church, will conduct services.

Cremation has been held and the ashes will be interred in Newton Union Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church may be left at Reese Funeral Home in Newton.

Mrs. Baird died Tuesday evening of respiratory failure at Altoona Manor in Altoona.

Survivors are three daughters, Carolyn Ogg of Kellogg, Judy Jones of Altoona and Sally Conde of Columbia, S.C.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arthur in 1962, an infant daughter, two brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Baird was a member of the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, St. Anne's Guild, Chapter LC PEO, Amboy Grange, Jasper County Historical Society, Newton Writers Club, Mc Cord Community Club, the Jasper County Genealogical Society and the Jasper County Farm Bureau.

The daughter of Arthur and Cora Anderson Hough, she was born Nov. 16, 1893 in Newton and was a1911 graduate of Newton Community High School.

She was married to Arthur E. Baird April 28, 1915 at her parents' home in Newton.

The Bairds farmed in Keokuk County from 1915 to 1936 when they returned to Jasper County, where they farmed until moving to Newton in 1962. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, September 1993
