Bernard E. Collins

Bernard E. "Sam" Collins, 60, of 1110 N. 4th Ave. W., a resident of Newton for 28 years, died Saturday morning, Oct. 31, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of pneumonia.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Jerome Egel, pastor of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Katherine; three sons, Terry W., Randall R. and Jay A., all of Newton; six daughters, LaDonna (Mrs. Donald) Thompson. Eugenia Ann (Mrs. Bradley) Adams and Marlene Couper, all of Newton; Nancy Marie Collins and Carla Jo Anderson, both of Skandia, Mich., and Tillena Fay (Mrs. James) Thompson of Grinnell; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Richard Collins of Blythedale, Mo., and five sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Howard) Critchfield of Colton, Calif., Winifred Shaffer of Waukee, Evelyn Clark of Des Moines and Frances (Mrs. Robert) Bush and Bonnie Green, both of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter in infancy, a brother, Tim, and a sister in infancy.

Mr. Collins had been employed in maintenance at Van Dusseldorp Sand and Gravel at Colfax for 18 years.

The son of Burness and Lena Long Collins, he aws born May 18, 1932 in Madison County and attended Van Meter High School.

He was married to Katherine Gronwold Jan. 27, 1952 in Van Meter. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, October 1992
