Clare A. Altemeier

Baxter - Clare A. Altemeier, 85, a resident of Colonial Manor in Baxter since March and formerly of Rt. 5, Newton, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines of pneumonia.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Reese Chapel.

The Rev. Matthew Martens, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today and visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials to a fund in his name may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are two sons, Larry of Rt. 5, Newton, and Lynn of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Douglas of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Katherine, in 1990 and three brothers.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, a life member of the Izaak Walton League and Elks Lodge 1270 of Newton and a member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau. A longtime farmer, Mr. Altemeier worked for the Maytag Co. in the late 1930s and early 1940s, retiring from farming in 1970.

The son of Louis and Katherine Altemeier, he was born April 17, 1908 on a farm northeast of Newton and was educated in Jasper County schools.

He and his wife were married April 14, 1939 in St. Joseph, Mo. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, August 1993
