Howard Peters Jr., 87, of Newton died Aug. 30, 2007, at the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Syd McCrorey of the Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton officiating.

Burial will be at the Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton. Friends may call from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials to the Hospice of Jasper County or to the Palo Alto Cemetery Fund may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Howard Peters Sr. and Fern (Bickford) Peters, he was born May 1, 1920, in rural Newton. He was a lifelong resident of Newton and a graduate of Newton High School, class of 1939. On Oct. 6, 1950, he was united in marriage with Arlene C. Charlesworth in Newton. He was a retired farmer and had served on the Jasper County Board of Supervisors for eight years.

He attended the Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton, was a member of the VFW Post 1655, the American Legion Post 111 and was a past president of the Jasper County Republican Party. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed his work with the Republican Party, but mostly he enjoyed working around his farm.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene of Newton; one son, David L. Peters of Newton; and three grandchildren, Nicholas, Lauren and Madeline Peters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Francis Peters; and two sisters, Shirley Waddell and Mary Ferguson.
