BAXTER — Robert D. McWhirter, 67, of Baxter died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at his home in Baxter. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Baxter High School Gym in Baxter with the Rev. Jerry Stevenson of Iowa City, officiating.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be at the Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County, the Baxter School Playground Fund or to a Scholarship Fund to be set up in Robert’s name may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home or at the gym on the afternoon of the service.

The son of Robert W. and Lillian (Robinett) McWhirter, he was born Aug. 1, 1940, in Marshalltown. He was a graduate of Baxter Community High School in 1958, and received his bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri University in 1965.

He was united in marriage to Sandra “Sam” Dickerbach on Aug. 7, 1967, in Malvern.

He was an auctioneer and a machinery dealer. He owned and operated B and M Auction, Chariton Farm Machinery Auction and McWhirter Implement. He was a member of the Newton Elks Lodge, Iowa Auctioneers Association, Wisconsin Auctioneers Association and California Auctioneers Association. He was an avid supporter of the Baxter FFA and the Baxter Community School. He was awarded the Baxter Lifetime Achievement Award and the Friends of the Jasper County Fair Award. He also enjoyed being with his grandchildren, riding his Harley, boating, sporting events and being at the Iowa Speedway.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra “Sam” of Baxter; one son, Brian (Julie) McWhirter of Baxter; two grandchildren, Hannah and Hunter McWhirter, both of Baxter; four sisters, Linda McWhirter of Baxter, Phyllis (Larry) Ballard of Newton, Laurie (James) Davis of Mickleton, N.J., and Sharon (Tom) DeWitt of Rogersville, Mo.; one brother, Gene (Kathie) McWhirter of Mount Pleasant; and foreign exchange son and his family, Christian (Lillian) Anderson and children, Rasmus and Simon of Denmark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Carolyn Ankeney; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
