Thomas B. “Tom” Kennedy, 89, died Aug. 22, 2007, at the Hospice of Jasper County’s Monarch Wing in Newton.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of the Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Friends may call after 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The family will greet friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorials to the Hospice of Jasper County or the Oddfellow Lodge #73 may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Thomas B. and Mabel (Bucklin) Kennedy Sr., he was born Sept. 6, 1917, in rural Baxter where he grew up. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. He was united in marriage with Catherine Jane McMaster Aug. 28, 1955, in Lancaster, Mo.

He attended the Baxter High School (10th grade). He worked for Chicago Great Western Railway, Main’s Garage, Kennedy Auto Repair and Nelson Brothers Warehouse, where he retired from in 1982. He was a member of the United Congregational Church of Christ, the Oddfellow Central Lodge #73, and the Rebekah Lodge #237.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine; two step-sons, Terry (Carol) VeVerka of Newton and Jim (Mary Joyce) VeVerka of Ames; seven grandchildren, Cary Ann (Steve) Rutherford, Cindy (Steve) McManus, Jerred (Michelle) VeVerka, Rhonda (Eulalio) Uresti, Christin (Bill) Bechtel, James (Lindsey) VeVerka and Benton VeVerka; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one niece, JoAnn Neal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ethel Ballantyne and Mary Ellen Steiner; and three brothers, Kenneth Kennedy and two in infancy.
