Lowell Leland Gause, 87, formerly of Newton, died of Alzheimer's disease on Oct. 11, 2007, at Sunnycrest Nursing Center in Dysart. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling the arrangements.

Lowell was born Oct. 10, 1920, in Lynnville. He was the son of Lester Harold and Clara (Lory) Gause. He graduated from Lynnville High School and graduate from Grinnell College with a bachelors degree.

Lowell enlisted in the Marine Corps and was commissioned in August of 1942. He served throughout the South Pacific and was part of the invasion and occupation of New Britain and the invasion of Pelelieu. He left the Marine Corps with the rank of Major in 1946.

Lowell was united in marriage with Dorothy Spain in 1947. He was employed as a loan officer at the Jasper County Savings Bank in Newton from 1947 until his retirement. Lowell remained in Newton until 1996, where he was a member of the Congregational Church, a Master of the Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star, White Shrine and BPOE. On Nov. 9, 1974, Lowell was united in marriage with Elizabeth “Betty” (Broadston) Minear in Newton.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, with burial at Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville at a later date. Friends are invited to join the family in the Pence Tribute Center following the services for a time of fellowship and refreshment.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Thomas David Gause; stepson, John Minear; his second wife, Betty on Aug. 29, 2000; and four brothers: Lester Jr., Vern, Elwin and Lory.

Those left to honor the memory of Lowell include his son, Leland (Susan) Gause of Falls Church, Va.; his daughter Julie Hook of Waterloo; stepdaughter Anne Swanson; four grandchildren; his first wife, Dorothy Johnson of Mitchellville; and brothers, Dwight Gause of Auburn, Wash. and Ralph Gause of Indianapolis, Ind.
