B. Irene (Hart) Gates, 85, of Newton died Sept.15, 2007, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, with Father Ernie Braida officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with a public Vigil service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Memorials to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to the First Presbyterian Church may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the service.

The daughter of William S. and Sarah (Mitrisin) Hart, she was born April 6, 1922, in rural Knoxville. She was a lifelong resident of Newton.

On May 30, 1941, she was united in marriage with Simon S. Gates Jr. in Newton.

She was a 1940 graduate of the Newton High School and worked for both Hough’s variety and Barrett’s Bakery on the west side of the Newton square prior to working 25 years for J.C. Penny Company as the Manager of the catalog desk. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Newton Ladies Elk Club. She loved being with her family, enjoyed her dog and traveling.

Survivors include one son, Bill (Bobbie) Gates Sr. of Urbandale; one daughter, Mary (David) Koppin of Newton; four grandchildren, Bill (Michelle) Gates Jr. of West Des Moines, Chris Gates of Houston, Texas, Angela (Bryan) Rausch of Newton, and Joe (Shannon) Koppin of Ankeny; nine great-grandchildren; one nephew, Jim (Peggy) Hoyt of Oskaloosa; and one niece, JoAnn (Marvin) Munger of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Simon in 1966; and one sister, Virginia Martin.
