Janet Louise Eilander, 65, of Newton passed away on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Janet was born March 8, 1942, in Prairie City, the daughter of Gerritt and Alice (Hawkins) Vander Leest. She attended Prairie City schools, graduating from Newton Senior High School.

On Dec. 21, 1974, Janet was united in marriage with Sylvester H. Eilander in Newton. They raised their family in Newton, where she was employed in retail by JC Penney Company and Diamond Vogel Paints.

Janet enjoyed her family, camping, boating, bowling, NASCAR, bluegrass music, music festivals and volunteering and preparing food at the local V.F.W. Post #1655. She was a member of the Jasper County Bowling Association and Rebekah Lodge, where she held several offices, and a member of the V.F.W. #1655 Auxiliary.

Janet was preceded in death by her father; her husband, Sylvester “Sy” on July 4, 1996; and a brother, James, in infancy.

A funeral service for family and friends will be at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Visitation with the family will be from 6 until 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Those left to honor the memory of Janet include her two daughters, Amy Marie Eilander of Johnston and Pam Miller of Des Moines; her two sons, Roger Miller and Ron Miller, both of Des Moines; her seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her mother, Alice Vander Leest of Newton; her four sisters, Dolores (Joe) McMaster of Kingman, Ark., Shirley (Harry) Harris of Grinnell, Beverly (Carlo) Supino of Newton and Roberta Lewis of Berwick; her brother, Robert (Carmen) Vander Leest of Newton; her aunt, Maxine McClellan of Prairie City; many nieces and nephews; and her many good neighbors and friends.
