BAXTER - M. Helene (Smith) Comstock Baxter died Sept. 18, 2007, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

She was born March 30, 1930, in Council Bluffs to Richard and Nellie Smith. Helene grew up in the Nevada area where she graduated from Nevada High School. She married Robert Comstock on July 1, 1949, and was blessed with 53 years of marriage before his death in 2002.

She worked in retail sales during her life. Helene enjoyed spending time with her family. She taught Sunday school for 33 years at the United Church of Christ in Baxter, she served her church as a deaconate, was a campfire and Girl Scout leader and active in the Baxter women’s club.

Helene will be missed by her children, Laura (Alvin) Hartgers and Teresa (Loren) Garr; five grandchildren: Jon (Deb) Hartgers, Jacob Hartgers, Amanda Garr, Walter Garr and Jesse Garr; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Hartgers, Michael Hartgers and Allie Garr; one daughter-in-law, Catrina Hartgers; and one brother, Kenneth Muse.

She is reunited in heaven with her loving husband, Robert “Bob”; one grandson, Jamie Hartgers; her parents; and one brother, Dick Smith.

Graveside funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Boyd-Davis Funeral Home in Baxter, where arrangements are being made.

Memorial contributions to Monarch Hospice at Skiff Medical Center in Newton may be made in Helene’s memory.
